Jesus loved to be at banquets! He spends most of Luke’s gospel either coming from, at, or going to a meal of some kind. He loved to eat with people; it was his way of doing mission and building community.
Famously in Luke 14 Jesus is at a banquet in the house of a religious leader who is trying to catch him out and Jesus flips things over and catches him out.
12 Then Jesus said to his host, ‘When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbours; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.’
Jesus always wanted the invitation of the kingdom of God to go far and wide, to the least, the last and the lost. He was always inviting and always welcoming! And the kingdom should be marked by generosity, hospitality, care and love.
We have run three community banquets* as a Church for the last three summers. And this Christmas, instead of a normal Sunday Gathering, we thought we’d throw a Community Christmas Banquet, where everyone is invited, but we make a special effort to invite those who are less fortunate and provide them with good food, craic, music, friendship, welcome and love.
The Event Details

And we’ll stop for 10-15 minutes during the evening to reflect briefly on the meaning of Christmas and what Jesus coming to earth means. We have lots of flyers to give away so please take some and give them to friends, neighbours and in local cafes.
If you’re coming and you’re able… please bring a dessert!
